Thoughts on Windows 7

When I first learned about release candidates early in college, I’ve come to revel at the opportunity to try out any beta Microsoft is willing to offer. Windows 7 is no different!

While at first I was not as impressed at I’d hoped, thinking this new OS is a glorified Vista, I have found a few subtle touches that make a huge difference. For example, as someone who uses hundreds of fonts for graphic design, I install them all at once when I re-image my machines. An oversight in Vista has been fixed in 7: the addition of a checkbox to disregard all conflicting filenames.

Of course there is the flashy stuff I love, such as the live, rollover “Show Desktop” button in the bottom corner. By far my favorite feature is the added themes for Aero. Hearing the different sound themes had me hooked!

I chuckle at the distinct ‘OSX Dashboard’ look of the new taskbar, but I actually find it more useful to place my most frequently used programs there, where instantly available, rather than as desktop shortcuts, requiring me to constantly minimize open programs. Previews for different items on the taskbar are still shown when moused-over, however they are no longer live, even if maximized behind other windows. Perhaps it requires a directx 10 compatible video card, something my 2-year-old laptop doesn’t have.

Overall, 7 will be a sigh of relief for the tech savvy. Even the UAC can be set to less naggy!

Connie and Kyle’s Wedding

2 November, 2008 (20:57) | Friends | By: admin

The whole weekend was so much fun.  And I really needed a vacation away with my friends.

When I started driving, I was dressed in my Sora costume!  All 5 weeks of working on it definitely paid off.  It was actually quite comfortable.  I stopped at a rest exit, and felt my face turn red as I walked to the bathroom, since a few guys in the car next to mine started staring at me.  But oh well.

When I got to the hotel, Rachel came out to greet me and didn’t recognize me at first.  Apparently I pulled it off well!  We went to dinner at Red Lobster and thankfully I wasn’t the only one in a costume there.  I need to learn to get over being self-conscious :)

We ate great food and each had a mudslide (Kahlua, Baileys and Vodka in a creamy mix, yum!) and ranted about our roommate troubles.  We got back to the hotel and were bored for a little while, but Beth called and invited to join the wedding party and their festivities (Nathan was a groomsman) and right as we got there, Kyle was giving his groomsmen gift bags.  These included a dice set all the way from d4’s to d20’s in cool colors, flasks filled with candy, stuff to become either a pirate or ninja, a lightsaber, and in case of a zombie uprising, a machete.  A real machete!  He went all out!

We then got to watch the wedding party practice a little non-traditional entrance to the reception.  Since everyone was given lightsabers, they formed two lines and raised them, forming an arch for the couple.  And of course, this was set to the processional music from A New Hope.  We gabbed with everyone and helped put together their centerpieces.  Kyle got on eBay and was able to get about 100 frosted glass jars, which were had a vellum cone inside.  He had a box of red LEDs and tons of lithium batteries.  So we filled the jars with light!  They looked awesome, and the battery is supposed to last about a week.

We gabbed some more, ate Halloween candy and played some Zombie Fluxx.  But it was time for bed.  Rachel and I got to sleep in, since we weren’t in the wedding, and we spent the morning watching spongebob and being lazy.

When we got to the church, Kyle and the groomsmen were waiting in the narthex, and ushered us to the front.  The cathedral was gorgeous, with Corinthian pillars and stained glass.  Behind the alter was a huge pipe organ in a half-dome.  The crucifix was actually an icon with St. Mary looking over the cross.  There weren’t any flowers on the alter, but there were small bouquets hanging on the edges of the pews.  The ceremony was beautiful!  They had a small live band play the music, and the processional was actually a gorgeous instrumental piece from Chrono Trigger.  I was already tearing up, because I loved the music and Connie was just gorgeous!  Her dress was a halter top, with embroidered lace and beading down the front.  And she had a red sash styled in an empire waist, with two tails out behind her, covered in white beading.  Really pretty! They rode off in a powder blue Model-T ford (as far as I can tell ;) with cans rattling behind them.

When we got to the reception, we found seats and waited around for everyone else, and after a while I noticed the cake.  It was Companion Cube!  That was just too awesome.  They even had the groom’s cake as the cake at the very end of portal. So cool!  The processional went off great, and everyone loved it.  They ended it by walking to the front table and raising their lightsabers and pounding them closed into the table.

The food was great, the toasts were great, and the skit was great.  Kyle has been inaugurated into the ball and chain prison as inmate number 11012008.  He got his ball and chain, and the keys were handed to Connie, as she gets this devilish look on her face.  Then they cut the cake, and took away a few tables for dancing.  And we all danced for a long time!  Then the bouquet and garter toss…and guess who caught the bouquet? Me! I was so surprised, and actually so happy!  Between my health problems as of late, and my lack of a social life because of school, this was especially meaningful to me.  I’ve been to a lot of weddings, and I’ve never caught the bouquet before.  So the fact that I caught it at the wedding of two of my greatest friends makes it rather symbolic.  Maybe that means a good relationship is coming my way!

All in all, it was so beautiful.  I was so happy to finally see them together, since I was there for a bit of their strife (and I hope I was able to help them with their strife,) and I saw them pull through.  They’re going to have a wonderful life.  And as for me, I got to spend time with my best friends, meet some new friends, and have a well-deserved break from my daunting schoolwork.  As for tonight, I’m not going to think about homework, do any homework or anything related to school…I’m just going to relax and play some games.

Beauty in a Scientific Life

14 October, 2008 (22:07) | Creativity | By: admin

I wish there was a time during the day when everyone would sit back, relax, and ponder on the beauty of the world. My college career is so scientifically based, and I find that people within that field tend to hyper-focus on the analytical nature of everything. Within myself, I struggle between two polar forces subsequently repelling and attracting one another. One side wants to spend time pondering the creativity of everyday life, with abstract flow of thought and idea. This was what I have been exposed to all my life. The other side wants to be extremely organized, succinct and above all, correct.

I have a paper due in a couple days about the neurophysiological effects behind ionotropic receptor modulation in hippocampal tissue. In layman’s terms, LTP. Hugely scientific. Yet the creative side of me longs to sit back, paint, write music, write stories…and thus the two opposing forces are in conflict. And when that happens, I tend to either get very stressed out, or end up expelling everything into a written venue, in a way that usually makes little sense.

But at least the act of writing brings the two forces closer together…
